One of many perks

March 6, 2006 :: :: Textuality

People from the less-snowy climes might not realize that when you live in northern Minnesota, folks frequently talk about the possiblity of "getting eight or nine inches tonight," which if you're a smartass like me, sets you up for the same hilarious punchline at least once a month if not more often.

This reminded me of something that happened over Christmas...

I was watching the channel 6 10 o'clock news with my brothers on Christmas Eve (or it might've been the day before that, it was sometime in there)...Mark Mallory was on, bantering playfully with Sven the weatherman as they were wont to do, and the conversation went a little something like this:

Mark: *slurring speech* Hey, Sven, pretty cold out there, huh?

Sven: Yeah, it is going to get chilly tonight, Mark.

Mark: Good night to stay inside. Maybe have some egg nog....maybe get loaded. *drunken laughter*

Sven: *quiet disbelief* Uhhh, yeah...heh-heh. *blinks*

And it was awesome.

Dude, I've worked sporadically in the newspaper business for a few years now (technically I've worked sporadically at every job I've had, but whatever), and when it comes time to fill blank space ("news hole," huhuh), the cries of "I need thirteen inches!" will never, never, NEVER stop making me chortle.

Everyone out there should get ready for 8 inches that's coming tonight.

Hello..........
